I remember my Mother telling me to always dress one level above what the occasion requires. A simple piece of practical advice that has saved me from a lifetime spent twisting around in front of mirrors. It was also, in its own way, a statement about my Mother herself.To her, everything was about detail. I never heard her say, “That’s fine” or “That will do”.

Everything about her was one level above what most people would expect. Her generosity was one level above, her compassion was one level above, her consideration for others was one level above. And on occasion, so was her anger. People referred to her as eccentric. But she wasn’t. She was one level above that. She was brilliant.
